What is it?Stroke, also known as a brain attack or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is damage towards the brain cells. This is due to oxygen deprivation due to a clot formed on the site, a clot that travels from elsewhere, or a hemorrhage. Strokes are a very common type of Central Nervous System (CNS) disorder. In the United states, strokes are the 3rd leading cause of death behind heart diseases and cancer. Strokes are the main cause of adult disability.
The amount of damage a stroke causes all depends on where in the brain the stroke occurs, and the amount of neurons that is damaged by the lack of oxygen. A stroke can impact many areas of the body. Some of these include: ability to see, move, remember, speak, reason, read and write. |
The damage that is causedWhen an artery to the brain gets blocked or even burst the blood supply to the brain is limited or non existent. The longer the blood goes with out blood, the less oxygen and nutrients is receives. This puts the brain at a greater risk to permanent brain damage.
